The Olumide Oyedeji Intercollegiate Basketball Championship ended on Saturday. But that will not be the end of tertiary basketball activities this quarter as the maiden edition of the Nigeria University Games University (NUGA) 3 Aside Championship will tip off on the 17th of February at the University of Lagos Sports Complex.

The championship which is aimed at promoting basketball and the 3x3 format within universities will be held in phases in three universities across the country - University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University and University of Abuja as follows;

ROUND 1 - Preliminary Stage for Southern Universities

Date: 17th and 18th February 2017

Venue: University of Lagos

ROUND 2 - Preliminary Stage for Northern Universities

Date: 24th and 25th February 2017

Venue: Ahmadu Bello University 

ROUND 3 - Final 10 Playoff

Date: 3rd and 4th March 2017

Venue: University of Abuja

Each preliminary stage is expected to feature at least 20 university and each university is expected to select its team. The main events are the games, dunking and shooting competitions while side attractions include music and dance. 

According to the Secretary General of NUGA, Mr Bola Orodele; "We hope the championship will be a continuous one. As this is the maiden edition, once we are done, we will evaluate the competition and if all things go as planned, we will make it an annual tournament"

We look forward to an exciting tournament and we hope subsequent editions will be FIBA Endorsed to enable the participants and the country earn some 3x3 ranking points.
