The Nigerian male premier basketball league might not bear the sponsorship title – DSTV Premier Basketball League – from this season as hinted by the Strategy and Marketing Manager of the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF), Mr Kunle Raji.

Briefing delegates at the Annual General Meeting of the Federation, Mr Raji explained that the tenure of the sponsorship agreement with DSTV ended last year and the Federation has communicated with the management of DSTV expressing interest to renew. However, the Federation is yet to receive any formal response.

“This notwithstanding, we are actively pursuing alternative sponsorship options. We are very close to finalising another sponsorship deal, a 5 year deal worth about $12m. A more profitable one than we currently have. We are not at liberty to disclose the details until it is formally announced because of non-disclosure clauses”

Over the year, stakeholders have decried the underdevelopment of the male premier league and have blamed it on the inadequacy of funding due to the singular sponsorship of DSTV. This announcement might indicate a change in the right direction.
