Summarize

Coach Sam Vincent has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of the women`s senior national basketball team, DTigress. This decision was communicated in a letter signed by Mr. Musa Kida on Thursday 2 August 2018 and it is coming less than two months to the tip-off of the 2018 FIBA Women`s Basketball World Cup.

The NBBF cited unprofessionalism, absence without permission and unsatisfactory performance at the ongoing training camp in the USA as reasons for the termination of his contract.

"The NBBF has been monitoring the goings on in Atlanta closely and we are not satisfied with a lot of things, and some due to your engagement with us as Coach

It is noted that since the Camp opened on 19th July, you have spent only 5 days with the team out of the 14 days so far.  In our opinion, you have clearly exhibited an unprofessional attitude towards your assignment and we do not believe that we can work with you anymore as the coach that can lead our National Team this way"

As such, be  informed that you are hereby relieved of your appointment as our National  Women`s Coach, to allow you concentrate better on your other activities, and allow us to regroup the willing members of our team in time for the World Cup"

Coach Vincent returned to DTigress after a 12-year break in 2017 and led the team to their third Women`s Afrobasket title in Mali which qualified the team for the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain.

Prior to this, Vincent led the D’Tigress to its first ever FIBA African Women’s Championship in Mozambique in 2003. It was the team`s first Afrobasket title. He was also responsible for the team`s second title in 2005 when Nigeria hosted the FIBA Women`s Afrobasket Tournament. He also coached the team to its first and only Olympic Basketball appearance to date at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Suffice it is to say that he his Nigeria`s most decorated national team coach.

As at the time of press, Coach Vincent has not made any formal comment on the terminational of appointment. We also expect the NBBF to name an official head coach to replace Vincent in the coming days. Assistant Coach Peter Ahmedu, is currently in charge of the team`s training camp.
